SSI Specialty Course – Night Diving and Limited Visibility (SC-LV) Practice Test

Maintaining close contact with your buddy is an essential tactic to prevent disorientation in limited visibility conditions while diving. In situations where the visibility is compromised, having a dive buddy provides both safety and assurance. The buddy system allows divers to communicate effectively and support each other, which is crucial when navigation becomes more challenging. Staying near your buddy helps maintain spatial awareness, ensuring that you can orient yourself relative to them. This physical proximity can also enhance safety, as it allows for immediate assistance in case of any issues, such as equipment problems or panic.

Other methods, while potentially helpful, do not offer the same level of immediate spatial orientation and support. For instance, using a dive computer can aid with depth and time monitoring, but it does not assist in understanding the physical environment or the relative position of other divers. Following a dive group offers some benefits but may not provide the same direct connection as maintaining close contact with a buddy, especially if the group spreads out. Swimming at varying depths could increase the chances of losing orientation further, rather than enhancing it. Thus, having close contact with your buddy is the most effective strategy to stay oriented and safe during dives in limited visibility.
